Our Mr. Popper's Penguins Book Box

For our unit study of Mr. Popper's Penguins I went to the library and collected several books.  I put together a combination of resource books and fun stories and placed them in a plastic ice bucket that I bought from Wal-Mart for $2.00.  We call it our unit study book box.

Book's from our Mr. Popper's Penguins Book Box:

  1. Plenty of Penguins by Sonia W. Black
  2. Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers
  3. Waiting for Ice by Sandra Markle
  4. One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo
  5. Antarctica The Antarctic Ocean by Lynn M. Stone
  6. Penguins by Emily Bone
  7. What's in the Egg, Little Pip? by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman
  8. The Emperor's Egg by Martin Jenkins
  9. My Season with Penguins; An Antarctic Journal by Sophie Webb
  10. Amazing Animals; Penguins by Valerie Bodden
  11. Follow That Map!  A First Book of Mapping Skills by Scot Ritchie
  12. The Magic School Bus In the Arctic; A Book About Heat by Joanna Cole
  13. How to Survive in Antarctica by Lucy Jane Bledsoe
  14. The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen
  15. Where is Home, Little Pip? by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman
  16. Magic Tree House Research Guide Penguins and Antarctica by Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Bryce
  17. Magic Tree House Eve of the Emperor Penguin by Mary Pope Osborne
We use our book box's for Reader's Corner (when my children pick a book each and read them to eachother), and I pick a few books from our book boxes to read to them each day.

In addition to this book box we also have a winter and holiday book box which we have pulled several snow science books out of and added to our study.

Thanks for stopping by Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy.  We hope to see you back soon!

Mr. Popper's Penguins Unit Study Chapters 1-3

Don't Miss the Best Part

And all My Hard Work!

*All of our FREE Printable Notebook Pages for this Unit Study are located at Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy on Wordpress.*

*This Unit Study does NOT work well without the FREE Printable Notebook Pages.  Please do NOT skip that step.*

Before we get started, please head over to Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy on Wordpress to download our FREE Notebooking Pages that accompany this Unit Study. The Notebooking Pages download is listed in the text as a clickable link, and then you must click it again on the next page.  You will also find a plethora or wonderful penguin resources!

  • Download and print our FREE Notebook pages which include our comprehension questions.  Have your child answer the questions for a chapter directly after reading it.  This study guide covers the first 3 chapters of Mr. Popper's Penguins.
  • Mr. Popper was a house painter.  Let's find out what a house painter does.  Now tell about what you learned in your notebook.

  • Find India, the Himalayas, South Seas, North Pole, and the South Pole on an atlas, globe, or world map.

  • Mr. Popper said that penguins live in the South Pole and Polar Bears live in the North Pole.  Compare North and South Pole and record your findings on a Venn Diagram. (use the Venn Diagram link above or make your own)
  • Do some creative writing and tell a short story of how a penguin traveled from the South Pole to the North Pole.
  • Be a detective and use the clues from the book to figure out what kind of penguin Mr. Popper got for his surprise.

  • The penguin walked the length and width of the bath tub and it was 6 steps in length and 2 steps in width.  Of course your child's feet aren't the same size as the penguins but for a fun math exercise have your child take 6 steps one foot in front of the other and mark the start and finish point.  measure the distance.  Now do the same for the width.  Describe to your child the difference between length and width.
  • This story starts off on Wednesday, September twenty-ninth and you will follow this family for 9 months.  Have you child record the Popper families adventures through these nine months.  They can tell details described in the story of what the seasons are like as well.  Keep a timeline of the events and any dates mentioned in the story.
  • Spelling: Have your child spell these words with alphabet beads or jot them down in their notebook. You can use them all or pick a few.
Here are the answers to the questions from the notebook:
  1. House Painter
  2. He had never seen the Poles, or even left Stillwater
  3. Bungalow
  4. The kind that lasted all year
  5. Answers will vary
  6. It had National Geographic Magazine Pictures all over the walls
  7. Answers will vary
  8. Answers will vary
  9. Answers will vary
  10. Too much dirt in the house and she already has enough dirt
  11. Goldfish
  12. They crowd together until one penguin gets pushed in
  13. They didn't have a TV

  17. A faint "ork"
  18. The penguin kept biting the faucets
  19. No
  20. Captain Cook

Lentil Unit Study

-

This is a unit study on the book Lentil.  You will need a copy of the book to go along with this unit study.  This is one of the book titles featured in the Five in a Row curriculum.  FIAR suggests for you to complete a book study in a week and to complete the curriculum in a year.  I found that if we expanded our study we could make the curriculum last 2 years or more.  Also, if you aren't able to obtain every book title it allows you the flexability to pick and choose.  Additionally, if you have slightly older children and you still want to include them in the study there isn't much suggested for them.  I have made this unit study to include multiple ages and abilities.  Of course as is with all curriculum do as much or as little you feel is a blessing to your family. Thanks for visiting Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy's Lentil Unit Study.  I hope you and your children enjoyed it and found it useful.

Please click this link to download the FREE 40 Page Lentil Unit Study Notebook from Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy to compliment this Unit Study.

Pages 1-2:

Pages 3-4:

Pages 5-6:

  • Notice Lentil is not wearing shoes.  Ask your child what is missing from Lentil's outfit?
  • Embarrassing: define it and then ask your child to tell you times when they've been embarrassed.  To take this further you can discuss the synonyms and antonyms, or have your child make a vocabulary card including their experience of being embarrassed.
  • Notice the animals.  Have your child point to all three.  What are they doing?  Why are they running away?

Pages 7-8:

  • There are 4 birds and 1 flew away.  How many birds are on the fence to stay?
  • Ask the child if there is anything they feel is really hard that they'd like to learn to do better.
  • If at all possible have a lesson about their answer.
  • Fence posts, fence posts, two by two, can you count the fence posts two by two? 2, 4, 6, 8, 10!
  • Pucker: define pucker and ask your child if they know how to pucker.

Pages 9-10:

Pages 11-12:

  • Expert: define expert and ask your child what they are an expert at and what they'd like to become an expert at.  Again, if you are making vocabulary cards add this one as well, including the answers from your child.  Sometimes it's fun to ask a child what they think it means before you look up the definition.
  • Character Training Bible Study on Pride and Humility
  • Proud: define proud and ask your child if they have ever felt proud.
  • Ask your child how does someone get good or talented at something. (they practice and the Lord blesses)
  • Have your child make a list of things that they are talented at.  Then pray with them and thank the Lord for all their talents.
  • Become,Whenever, and Wherever are compound words. Discuss how compound words work and ask your child to find the 3 compound words on page 12 and then have them start a list and write down all the compound words they can find in this book.  If they are younger you can stick to just those three and have your child write them a couple of times for practice, or have your child divide them with lines. (be/come)

Pages 13-14:

Pages 15-16:

  • If you don't live in a small town with a Main St. then travel to the closest one. If weather permits walk down Main St. and take in all the sites and sounds.
  • Do a little more exploring and see if you can find the finest house in the town.  Take a picture of it to put in your child's lapbook or record.  Have your child imagine what they think that person does.
  • While you are exploring the town make a map of important locations that you have found.  It doesn't have to be fancy.  It could be lines and boxes with labels.
  • What does Colonel stand for and how is it pronounced?
  • The finest house in Alto, Ohio is a Victorian.

Pages 17-18:

Pages 19-20:

  • Take your child to a Memorial Park or discuss their meaning.
  • Monument: define monument and then have your child create a monument from clay for someone they think is really special.
  • Methodist might or might not be a confusing word. This link will give you the history of the church.

 Pages 21-22:

  • While you are on your visit in the small town find an alley and walk or drive down it.  Make sure to include an alley in your map.
  • This would be a good time for your child to practice their harmonica skills they learned on pages 9-10.
  • You could also practice songs from your homeschool song book.

Pages 23-24:

Pages 25-26:

  •  Help your child plan a grand welcome for Dad when he comes home from work.  Make welcome signs and party decorations and plan to sing him one of the songs from your homeschool song book, or play the harmonica.  If you have alot of children have them make band instruments from cereal boxes and other household items.
  • Have your child count how many newspapers there are.
  • Then study the history of the newspaper.
  • Get a Sunday or local paper and study the different parts.  Have your child(ren) write and illustrate their own newspaper of their daily events.
  • What is short fluffy and has a tail?  Can you find it?

Pages 27-28:

Pages 29-30:

Pages 31-32:

Pages 33-34:

  • Have your child describe what each person might be thinking. (what would be in a thought bubble above their head)
  • This is a great opportunity to talk about adjectives (describing words).  Make a list of describing words for these pages with your child.
  • Adjective Activities, Compare Adjectives,Fun Dip Adjectives Activity
  • Activity;cut 1 lemon in half and ask the child the following questions and write down their answers.  This should create a nice list of adjectives.
    • What does the lemon look like?
    • What does the lemon smell like?
    • What does the lemon feel like?
    • What does the lemon taste like?
    • Have your child illustrate a lemon and then in black (in a graphic arts style) have them write all the adjectives they used to describe the lemon.

Pages 35-36:

Pages 37-38:

Pages 39-40:

Pages 41-42:

Pages 43-44:

Pages 45-46:

Pages 47-48:

  • What is the History behind "Comin' 'round the Mountain When She Comes?"
  • Point out that Col. Carter is snapping his fingers and tapping his heels together.  Challenge your child to snap his fingers (a hard skill to acquire, so stop when it becomes frustrating) and/ or tap his heels together.  If your child is older have them try both at the same time!
  • How many buttons can you find?(I counted 19 visible buttons)  For younger children see how  many different ways they can add/subtract to get the answer 19.  For older children have then multiply/divide to get the answer 19.  If you have actual buttons allow them to use them as manipulative's.
  • Download and print this button sort game.  If you don't have your own buttons to do the above activity print out extras of the button's in this printable.

Pages 49-50:

  • Have your child count how many flags there are.  Then multiply by how many stripes are in the American Flag to find out how many stripes there are total.  Then multiply by how many stars there are.
  • If you didn't get to all the Flag activities before, then now would be a good time to finish up or expand with these craft ideas.
  • Practice the harmonica, sing songs from your song book, Practice She'll be "Coming Around the Mountain When She Comes."
  • Get the band instruments back out and have a parade for an audience of teddy bears.

Using Media In Your Homeshcool

Today, I ran across a website that allows you to make your own video with their animation software for FREE!  Not only that but they make it easy to share it to facbook and you tube.  You can also search for others videos and become their fans.

I started my account today and played with the features and found the usability suprisingly easy.  In my humble opinion, I thought this would make a very useful and enjoyable homeschool resource.  It seems the possabilities are endless.

I came up with a list of ways to utilize this website for homeschool.  It is as follows:

  1. Reading comprehension: have your children retell the story you just read, or after finishing a chapter book.
  2. Writing: have your child create a video of a story, poem, or report they wrote.
  3. Math: have your child explain a math lesson that they just learned.
  4. Math: have your child come up with a song that helps them remember math facts and then you can watch it again and agian for review.
  5. History: Have your child write a fictional story using historical facts they have learned.
  6. History:  Act out a scene from your history book.
  7. Science: Have your child describe a cycle such as a life cycle or the water cycle.
  8. Unit Study: Have your child put a presentation together to sum up the key things they learned in the unit study instead of doing a report.
  9. Highschool: Have your older child practice job interviewing skills, or do a news report.
  10. Vocabulary/Spelling: Have your child put together a lesson using their vocabulary or spelling words and present it at co-op or to other siblings and friends.

Those are just some of the ideas I had.  If you use one of these ideas and create a video please comment below and share your experience.  If you come up with a completely new idea please share that as well.  It would be great to have a plethera of comments below sharing links to their homeschool videos.  I will be adding any videos my children make and share them with you.

I am so excited to announce that Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy just launched our NEW Facebook page! (Click the link and it will take you to our NEW Facebook Page)

I felt there was a need to have a place where I could post FREEBIES that might expire or weren't permanent.  I strongly dislike broken links, so therefore I try not to post any links that might expire or change.  I find many FREEBIES that are for a limited time only or at a new unreliable blog that are really worth checking out, but aren't the material I want to post on my blogs.  Facebook was the natural choice for being able to post links that are time sensitive.

Another benefit to a Facebook page is sharing with folks other great homeschooling blogs that I follow, articles that I read, recipes that I find and in a more timely fashion.

I will also be posting updates that I have made to Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy.  It's a great way to communicate with my readers also.  Facebook is a more fluid communication device then blogs are.  You can have instant dialog with me and other homeschoolers.

I truly hope that Noah's Ark Homeschool Academy is a service to the homeschooling community and that we are creating a valuable resource for many families.  Thanks for you support!

Where To Buy Used Homeschool Curriculum

In many cases homeschool families are on a tight budget, largely to do with being a one income family.  We are a thrifty breed and are always on the lookout for ways to save money.  I for one, pay special attention to the words FREE, USED, and REUSABLE.  When you apply these words to curriculum now you're really talking BIG SAVINGS, as we all know how expensive curriculum can be.  For large families with multiple ages it can really get out of control.
I normally follow these steps when looking for curriculum:

* Does someone I know have this, and can I borrow it or have it?
* Check the Library's resources
* Search for FREE resources online
* Search USED items for sale in a co-op or online
* Look for REUSABLE items on SALE

I have put together a list of websites that sell USED homeschool curriculum below:

* Homeschool Classifieds
* Vegsource
* Amazon (search a specific title or homeschool)
* Ebay (search a specific title or homeschool)
* Christian Homeschoolers
* Another Day Books
* Ed Accents
* Ed Ex Books
* Homeschool Surplus
* The Back Pack
* Used Homeschool Curriculum
* Well Trained Mind Forums
* Swap (search a specific title or homeschool)

If you like FREE stuff like I do click this link to go to Homeschool For Free with Noahs Ark Homeschool Academy!

You can also find FREE homeschool curriculum on Homeschool Buyers Co-op!
 I hope this has been helpful.  Do you have some great sites that I don't have listed yet?  If you do please share them so I can add them!  Thanks, all and have a blessed day.
