Life of Fred: Apples, Chapter 8

• Fred swam over to the north side of campus.  Swim on over to this interactive map and practice your skills using a compass rose!

• Head over to this amazing math resource and click ENTER.   Next, click GEOMETRY.  Then, lick on BASIC SHAPES and CIRCLE.  You may want to just read this over with your child from the computer, or you may want to print it out and add it to their notebook to review often.  While you are there, click on SQUARE and COMPASS POINTS.
• Homeschoolmath.net has a great lesson on circles.
• When learning about circles, it's a great time to introduce simple fractions.  Education.com has a simple and cute pizza fractions worksheet to print for free.
• If you are interested in a complete fractions lesson, Cynthia Lanius has put together a great online fraction lesson that even self grades!
• Games are great for teaching and reinforcement.  Education.com has a great pizza fraction game that you can print and play for free!
• Learn how to use circles and ellipses to draw objects. 
Ellipse:


• Have your child draw at least seven fish using this lesson.  It's really easy for even the smallest hands with this 4 step method.  After they have drawn their fish have them color or decorate them.  Cut them out and use them for counters to make the parts of 7.
• Kidsparkz has a free printable fish bowl counting mat to download and print.  This printable includes fish counters, but if you can allow the time for your child to create their own, it will be more enjoyable!  They also have a pizza counting mat as well, that would be fun to add to your fraction lesson!

• How many cloud droplets does it take to make one raindrop?
• Use the raindrop manipulative's from Chapter 6 to practice equations for parts of seven.
• Archimedes

• Review what you have learned about Archimedes in Chapter 6.
• How old is Fetti's Painting? Take the year it is now and subtract the year that Fetti painted Archimedes Thoughtful and record your results in your math journal.
• Do the math to figure out what year photography was invented and record your results in your math journal.
• Draw a picture of what you think Archimedes looks like and give your Masterpiece a title.  Write a synopsis of what you have learned thus far about Archimedes.

• Have your child fold their blue paper into four equal sections
• Then have your child put no glue dots in the first section
• A little bit in the second section
• A medium amount in the third section
• And a BIG amount in the last
• Then hang them up so the glue dots drip down and dry to look like rain drops

• Temperature:
• Set your thermometer to 15 degrees below zero. 

• Set your thermometer to the temperature it is outside today at your house.

• Set your thermometer to the temperature it is inside today at your house.

• Calculate the differences between them.

• Telling Time
• Set your clock to 8:00am.

• Set your clock to the time your normally start your school day.

• Calculate the elapsed time.

• Draw stairs to illustrate 1st, 2nd,3rd......10th in number and word form.

• Practice writing the days of the week with the Days of the Week Handwriting Pages.

• If you don't have mini-marshmallows then you can substitute with cotton balls.

• If you have older children that are ready for place values use Campfire Marshmallows, the regular size Marshmallows, and Mini Marshmallows.  Have you children solve place value equations using marshmallows instead of base ten blocks.

• For snack: of course, you need to make s'mores.
• 12 Graham crackers broke in half
• 6 Hershey Chocolate Bars (we used special dark, but you can use milk chocolate)
• 6 Campfire Marshmallows cut in half with scissors
• Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
• Cook for 10-15 minutes
• Let cool and enjoy!

 

 

• Craft a 3 story shape house and label it.
